Session I: Canada’s energy challenge
Whether developing complex oil projects, finding innovative ways to produce and export natural gas or building complex infrastructure for export, the energy sector is central to the Canadian economy. However, efforts to develop new export opportunities are facing challenges domestically and abroad. As a consequence, Canada is forgoing billions a year in lost oil and gas revenues and in some cases plans to expand production are being scaled back or suspended. The panel will examine the strategies that Canada can pursue to capitalise on its energy advantage and ensure it has a robust social license to operate. |

Session II: Alternate export strategies
The delay of the Keystone XL pipeline, a lengthy review process for the Northern Gateway project and declining continental gas exports are examples of a volatility that is leading companies to pursue alternate energy export strategies. LNG and oil refining projects are proposed for Canada’s east and west coasts, and increasing volumes of Canadian crude are being moved by rail and barge to markets south of the border. Who will be the winners in this high stakes game? The panel will examine the strategies being implemented to move Canadian energy resources in these uncertain times. |

New export markets alone will not be enough to put a floor under energy prices. Canada must increasingly add value to its energy products and seek new end uses for its energy resources. How effective has Canada been in terms of attracting investment to energy and manufacturing businesses? What do companies look for when deciding on a location to invest? Can Canada’s energy resources drive a manufacturing renaissance? Panelists will examine the strategies that companies are pursuing to transform oil and gas into a myriad of value-added products and applications. |
